SGS Baseefa commissions new gas mixing system for flameproof testing

21 August 2015

SGS Baseefa of Buxton has recently completed the commissioning of a new gas mixing system for flameproof testing – which is five times faster than the previous one. Although the previous equipment was accurate, an increasing number of Baseefa’s customers have been submitting ever-larger flameproof equipment for testing – particularly in the field of electric motors.

As a result, the rate of gas flow through enclosures of this type was beginning to cause a bottleneck in the testing process at SGS Baseefa’s Buxton laboratories.

The new system uses mass flow controllers to accurately set the gas mixtures and significantly reduces the set-up time previously required. It is able to pass 500 litres per minute through the system rather than the previous 100 litres per minute – a five-fold improvement. This also allows a greatly reduced time between ignition events in the larger enclosures.

Scott Ramsdale, SGS Baseefa’s principal Flameproof Testing Engineer said: “The new system offers significant improvements on the old one in a number of key areas, particularly with respect to gas mixture settling times and enclosure filling times.

“We have also installed the outlet O2 sampling and the temperature and humidity measurement much closer to the enclosure under test, which results in less gas usage and helps to ensure our testing costs are very competitive.”

Steve Taylor, SGS Baseefa’s Laboratory Manager, explained: “With the significantly increased throughput in the testing cell, we are achieving a much quicker response for our customers. This can help ensure a reasonable pay-back time for the significant capital costs they face in developing new products.”

Adam Crowe, SGS Baseefa’s Operations Manager, commented: “This is just the latest example of the significant number of investments we are making in order to meet our customers’ expectations.

“It further enhances SGS Baseefa’s worldwide reputation in the field of the certification and testing of hazardous area equipment and related services.”
