French hazardous materials transport company hit by series of blasts

04 April 2016

Four firefighters were injured in a series of explosions at the premises of a hazardous materials transport company based in an industrial park at Bassens north of Bordeaux. Local authorities later said the explosions were centred on five tanker trucks parked at the CD Trans site on April 3.

A fire is thought to have started in one tanker which then exploded, showering the other tankers with burning materials and causing them to explode in turn.

The tankers were empty, but are thought to have contained residual amounts of combustible gas.

The Bassens industrial zone has three Seveso plants and more than 100 firefighters established a protective cordon around the site and evacuated some residents living nearby prior to extinguishing the fire.
