Alstom launches eco-friendly passenger train powered by hydrogen fuel cell

French power engineering group Alstom has launched an innovative zero-emissions train at the InnoTrans exhibition in Berlin. Coradia iLint is a new CO2-emission-free regional train and an alternative to diesel-powered units. It is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, whose only emissions are steam and condensed water, while operating with a low level of noise.

Alstom is one of the first railway manufacturers in the world to develop a passenger train based on fuel cell technology. To make the deployment of the Coradia iLint as simple as possible for operators, Alstom is offering a complete package consisting of train and maintenance, as well as the complete hydrogen infrastructure.

“Alstom is proud to launch a breakthrough innovation in the field of clean transportation which will complete its Coradia range of regional trains. It shows our ability to work in close collaboration with our customers and develop a train in only two years,” said Henri Poupart-Lafarge, Alstom Chairman and CEO.

This launch follows the Letters-of-Intent signed in 2014 with the German states of Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, and the Public Transportation Authorities of Hesse for the use of a new generation of emission-free train equipped with fuel cell drive.

There are specific safety risks associated with the use of hydrogen in fuel cells. The US Occupational Safety & Health Administration, for example, says: “Hydrogen fires are invisible and if a worker believes that there is a hydrogen leak, it should always be presumed that a flame is present. When workers are required to fight hydrogen-related fires, employers must provide workers with necessary protective gear to protect them from such invisible flames and potential explosion hazards."
