A fire service spokesman said 20 firefighters and three tenders brought the ensuing fire under control within an hour, adding that the reason for the blast could have been explosives in the used military equipment and materials imported from the Gulf which are recycled into steel at the plant.

Factory manager Rajendra Prasad said that though the material is segregated carefully by the supplier, there may have been a lapse. Both the company and fire service have initiated inquiries into the incident.
