After a strange 2016, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
22 December 2016
After the extraordinary political developments of 2016, principally the British vote to leave the EU and the election of Donald Trump in the US, 2017 is shaping up to be an equally transformative year in Europe. Italian political developments will continue to resonate across the EU in the early part of the year, to be followed by the campaigns by populist insurgents in the Dutch General Election in March and in the French Presidential Election in April and May
Any further upset in these key countries will have profound effects on the shape and future of the EU, the stability of the world banking and economic systems and the whole backdrop against which our industries continue to do business on domestic and international markets.
In this time of flux, it will be important that the Government recognises the prime role of UK companies in wealth generation as it starts Brexit negotiations with our EU neighbours after Article 50 is triggered in March. At a minimum, we need an industrial policy that ensures the supply of competitive energy, a secure environment for investment and scientific progress, and the availability of skilled people. Tariff-free access to the single market would also be a huge boost, but maybe that is wishing too much…
Meanwhile, as this strange year comes to end, we at Hazardex would like to wish our readers, advertisers, contributors and other friends a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your support, and we hope to see many of you at the Hazardex event in March.
I am confident we can build an build an even stronger community together in 2017.
