For over a decade, Elfab’s original Flo-Tel System has offered customers across a wide range of industries the unique features of ATEX approved, non-invasive, failsafe and reusable detection when using rupture discs. The company has now developed an industry first - the Flo-Tel XD intrinsically safe Exd-rated burst detection system.
Working with key customers, Elfab’s engineers sought to offer a more cost-effective system for arduous operating conditions. This led to the introduction of a fully Exd-approved system, Flo-Tel XD, removing the need for intrinsically safe barriers and interfacing directly with the customer remote terminal unit, all of which reduces installation costs considerably.
Exd-rated technological capabilities
Elfab’s approach to innovation is a true industry first. Flo-Tel XD was designed to have a burst detection system suitable for ATEX enclosures. Using the tried and tested technology of its original Flo-Tel design, the XD is the first system with an Exd-rated junction box, with M20 tapping suitable for industry standard cable glands.
Flo-Tel XD is intrinsically safe with an IP67 rating certified by ATEX and IECEx. Its robust, flameproof design can be used across multiple markets and applications across the globe. Also suitable for use in the highest ATEX zones, subject to the EX concept chosen. Operating on simple reed switch and magnet technology, Flo-Tel XD Exd-approved detection systems are uniquely designed to offer a practical solution for rupture disc detection needs in extreme environments. It is not affected by downstream fluctuations or corrosion and the sensor is not in contact with the process, and therefore has no potential leak paths.
Cost savings are being recognised by XD users, firstly, the integrated magnetic detection technology avoids re-wiring costs following a rupture disc burst, as only the disc needs replacing. Secondly, ongoing maintenance costs are kept to a minimum, as periodic checks can be carried out by a non-electrically qualified fitter by using Elfab’s installation tool, “Test-Tel” deigned to check the rupture disc status to identify whether the magnet is intact. Increased rupture disc reliability and burst detection needs are increasingly in demand for high integrity hazardous applications. Customers are now seeking increasingly advanced systems to provide this detection without stretching budgets. In line with recent development within high integrity industries and in aid of responding rapidly to customer demand, Elfab recognised that by developing their detection system further and supplying it with an XD enclosure, the customer would benefit from improved installation and significant cost reduction.

Introduction of RFID technology
The planned introduction of RFID technology will also help further with onsite safety, detection and operational efficiency designed to ensure correct installation of disc in the accompanying holder. By incorporating Exd technology with an interfacing RFID device, this results in a single solution for notification of disc burst and installation status.
Offering unique design, testing and consultancy has led to the innovation of XD detection. Without combined knowledge of our customers’ needs and technical expertise, the launch of this product would not have been as quick or successful. Overall, the launch of this innovation has helped the company become the market leader within the pressure management field.
