In 2014, Pepperl + Fuchs released the HiC2441 SMART universal IS barrier, which is the perfect solution for implementing the actual DCS concept of universal I/O into the hazardous world. HiC2441 provides the four standard functionalities AI, AO, DI and DO within one device
The SMART Universal Barrier HiC2441 has: 1-channel isolated barrier; 24 V DC supply (bus powered); Analog input, digital input, analog output, digital output; No configuration required, device is self-adapting; HART transparency; Low power dissipation; 3-way isolation and Up to SIL 2 acc. to IEC 61508 in preparation
First it is necessary to understand, that an IS barrier performs no functionality at all when seen as a single component. Only in combination with an attached control system and field devices does the IS barrier fulfill an important and necessary task. Therefore IS barriers are specified and developed to work in combination with the distributed control system (DCS) and field devices.
When having a closer look at the I/O modules of current and upcoming DCS – such as Honeywell Process IO, Honeywell Safety IO, Yokogawa N-IO and Emerson Charms - it can be seen that all these systems have one common feature. They have universal I/O cards implemented, which allow to parameterize their functionality directly from the control room without having the need to install dedicated I/O cards depending on the corresponding field device.
This removes the need of having marshalling cabinets. Having an optimized IS barrier for such a system without subverting one of the main DCS features means that also the barrier must fulfill the requirements of:
• having all standard functionalities included in one device
• configuration from the control room possible or even better no configuration at all necessary
No configuration of the functionality is needed, since the barrier adapts itself to the attached DC and field device combination.
Approvals include: ATEX [Ex ia]; ATEX Zone 2; IECEx; cULus; Functional Safety SIL2 according to EN61508:2010 and DNV.
