Three killed and seven injured in explosion at Louisiana paper mill

10 February 2017

Packaging Corp of America said an explosion at its DeRidder, Louisiana, paper mill resulted in the death of three contract workers on February 7, with seven others confirmed injured. The incident occurred while annual repair work was being carried out on piping in the mill area, the company said.

Louisiana State Police Sgt. James Anderson said the injured were transported to area hospitals for treatment and described the injuries as moderate to minor.

Initial reports claimed the incident involved an explosion of two tanks containing undetermined liquids, and that there was no subsequent fire.

"Our primary concern is for the safety and well-being of the people working on our site," the company's statement said. "The top priorities at this time are the notification of families of the deceased contractors and investigation of the incident with authorities."

The Lake Forest, Illinois, based PCA acquired the old Boise paper mill in DeRidder in 2013.
