Dutch and Danish grid operators to form offshore power hub in North Sea

Dutch power grid operator TenneT said on March 8 it had found the first partner for its plan to create an offshore energy hub in the North Sea, Danish power transmission company Energinet.dk. TenneT's plan, first announced in June, involves the construction of one or more artificial islands surrounded by wind farms on the Dogger Bank in the North Sea.

The hub would be roughly at the centre of the North Sea between The Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Britain, Norway and Belgium, with connections to each. Up to 100,000 MW of capacity is expected to flow through the hub.

As the capacity of North Sea offshore wind farms grows, having a central hub will make it easier to apportion the low-carbon power to European nations as needed, and ultimately help the EU meet targets for cuts in emissions, the company says.

Discussions with other potential partners are ongoing, which include other North Sea transmission system operators and infrastructure companies. The goal is to achieve a multi-party consortium which will complete the North Sea Wind Power Hub project.

TenneT says the chosen area on Dogger Bank is relatively shallow and the shallower the water, the lower the cost of building the wind farms and the island.

TenneT and Energinet.dk both have extensive experience in the fields of onshore grids, the connection of offshore wind energy and cross-border connections. TSOs are best placed to play a leading role in the long-term development of the offshore infrastructure. I am happy that we are going to take this step with our Danish colleagues and I look forward to the participation of other transmission system operators and possibly other partners.”
