Portugal fireworks factory blast kills five, three missing

04 April 2017

Five people died and another three were missing after an explosion on the evening of April 4 destroyed a fireworks factory at Avoes near the Portuguese town of Lamego. The victims were all workers at the plant 100km east of Porto, and the factory's owner was among the dead. All of the workers at the factory came from three local families, a local council spokesman said.

An initial explosion happened at around 17:30, followed by two more blasts, the Diario de Noticias website said. Some of the victims were found a short distance from the factory, apparently propelled from the building by the force of the blast.

Officials from the Civil Protection Service told Portuguese media that rescuers were initially unable to enter the site because of the potential risk to their safety, and that they had little hope of finding survivors.
