Whirligig Speed Monitor Attachment - ATEX Mechanical Approval

27 April 2017

Synatel Instrumentation Ltd., a UK designer and manufacturer of level controls, proximity sensors,  speed monitors, counter displays and photoelectric sensors for industry, have an ATEX EN 80079 approved Speed Monitor Attachment (Whirligig) for use with all 18mm, 30mm or 40mm DIN standard limit switch style inductive proximity sensors and speed monitors.

The Whirligig is suitable for explosive dust and gas hazard areas. (Dust Zone 20/Gas Zone 0). It simply attaches to the end of a shaft on the machine to be monitored, via a M12 threaded hole. It provides suitable targets for detection by the sensor, and requires no additional guarding. The rotating targets are located under a cover. A base plate is provided, together with an 18mm/30mm bracket and screws, allowing easy fixing of which ever sensor style is being used.

A fixing strap is used to retain the base plate and is fixed to a static part of the machine, this prevents the sensor and baseplate from rotating with the shaft, but allows for minor movement where the fixing hole has not been drilled centrally.

For applications where machinery is already in situ and the shaft is too close to a wall, or other objects, to allow access with a drill for drilling the mounting hole, a magnetic coupling (MagCon)  is available which screws onto the Whirligig shaft, the rare earth magnets then hold the unit onto the end of the shaft. Again, if the Whirligig isn’t mounted exactly central, the flexible retaining strap will allow small movement. Target options of 1 pulse, 2 pulse, 4 pulse or 8 pulse per revolution are available, specified at time of ordering.

Other approved sensors include Level Controls, Proximity Sensors and speed monitors.
