Five hurt in explosion at Michigan steelworks

02 August 2017

At least five employees were injured after an explosion at United States Steel Corp.'s Great Lakes Works facility in River Rouge, Michigan, on July 31. The five workers were transported to local hospitals for treatment following the incident at the facility's Hot Strip Mill, according to a statement from US Steel issued on August 1.

Of the employees that were injured, two remained in hospital a day after the incident having suffered burns and lacerations. Officials said that the explosion left a 30-foot-by-60-foot section of wall missing at the Hot Strip Mill.

The Hot Strip Mill was idled after the blast but other Great Lakes Works operations continue.

"We do not anticipate any impact on customer shipments as we have additional Hot Strip Mill capacity at other domestic US Steel facilities, if needed," the company said in a statement.
