Six killed in explosion in Mexican fireworks factory
18 December 2017
A gunpowder blast at a fireworks factory killed six people and injured five others in Jilotepec, near Mexico City. Of the six buildings on the site, four were severely damaged and locals said the explosion rattled windows a kilometre away.
One resident told the newspaper El Diario that it was not the first such incident in their community because of the number of fireworks being handled in the locality.
There have been several explosions in just the last few weeks at small fireworks factories across the country. In the past week one person was injured in Abasolo, Guanajuato, along with two others in Almoloya de Juárez, México state. Three died and one was injured in a blast in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, on November 29.
On November 20, three people were injured in Tultepec, México state, where a massive explosion took place one year ago, killing 32 people at a fireworks market. A young man died after suffering severe burns in an explosion November 10 at an illegal factory in San Juan Xiutetelco, Puebla.
