B2. Ametek: XP2i Digital Test Gauge now has a new calibration reminder alert feature 

The intrinsically safe XP2i digital pressure gauge is a popular product in the Oil & Gas market because of its ease of use, ruggedness, reliability, and accuracy.  It is used as both a process gauge with data logging, and as a calibration instrument. 

As with other gauges, the XP2i needs to be calibrated annually to guarantee its accuracy.  Just this year, we have released a new version of the gauge that will alert users prior to, on, or after the gauge’s calibration due dates.  Users can even select the type of alert, from a start-up warning to a continuous warning that prevents the user from operating the gauge. 

Both the calibration due date and the type of warning is customizable using free software.  Having this feature helps assure that a gauge is not used outside of its calibrated time frame.  Otherwise, using a gauge that is potentially out of tolerance can lead to measurement errors that can lead to a variety of safety concerns. 

The XP2i with calibration warnings is quickly being adopted by top companies to assure that their important equipment remains in tolerance.


B3. Trolex: TX3706 Falcon 25 Ex Connector

Robust, incredibly rapid assembly Ex Connector for power and data cables. Available as in-line or box-mount version

The TX3706 Falcon 25 Ex Connector is a robust, 25mm, 9-37pin stainless steel or aluminium Ex Connector that can be assembled in around 5 minutes without the need for special tools or equipment. Featuring a simple, intuitive mating system with maximum safety and high tolerance of debris and contamination in tough site conditions. Falcon 25 can be parted in the hazardous area for short periods to allow maintenance or change out of equipment, following normal risk assessment procedures.

Available as an inline version with plug and receptacle, or as a box-mounted version to connect directly into Ex d and Ex e enclosures and equipment.

Exceptionally sturdy, stable, lightweight and portable, the SA POWERNET range features marine-grade steel and practically indestructible composite for decades of maintenance-free service in the most demanding of conditions.

Centrica were looking to reduce costs and extend the life of the Rhyl Field, SA Equip were commissioned to assess the power supply on the Normally Unmanned Installation and provide cost-saving solutions. ATEX certified products were required as the platform was still processing gas, however limited capacity on board led to the necessity for portable power solutions. The first challenge was power supply which was limited to a small number of 440v sockets which had not been used for years, these sockets were 63amp and in a state of disrepair.

ATEX certified SA POWERNET Mains Distribution Units were provided in many options, 32-amp and 16-amp which provided usable power to supply either welders or the 3.8KVA Transformer. This reduced the requirements for hot-work permits or standby men, which lowered the costs and risk of monitoring the installation. SA POWERNET Extension Leads and Splitter Boxes were used extensively to take power to the work sites to power the SA LUMIN Floodlights, which were supplied for temporary lighting throughout the installation.

SA Equip products are lightweight and portable which enabled easy transportation of products around the deck using minimal manpower, reducing costs which was a requirement as they had limited resources to spare. Centrica’s decision to buy the equipment was helped as the expenditure spread over the five-year period equalled a very low-cost of ownership, compared to the original intention of renting the equipment.

B5. TSG Marine: TSG/Pipe Repair with SPS

TSG Marine provide innovative engineering solutions to the Oil & Gas, Marine and Renewables industries.  We introduced TSG/Pipe Repair with SPS to combat a common O&G industry challenge. Corroded and damaged pipes are a massive challenge offshore, especially when these become safety critical.

Traditional permanent solutions included cutting out and welding in place replacement pipework – this therefore meant hot-work was required and a shut down.  Shut down’s are of course expensive as is any associated work scope downtime, TSG Marine decided that there must be a better way of dealing with the issue and worked with business partners SPS and DNV GL to come up with a solution to this problem. That solution was TSG/Pipe Repair with SPS. A permanent, class approved, no hot work repair that can be installed without shut down.  Launched at Offshore Europe in Aberdeen in September 2017, the development of TSG/Pipe Repair with SPS has many links with industry objectives of cutting costs by decreasing downtime and extending the life of assets in the offshore environment. 

About the technology/innovation

This exciting new product is a pragmatic response to common pipework corrosion problems experienced in many industries.  TSG/Pipe Repair with SPS is a permanent class-approved pipework repair solution used where structural integrity, containment, or protection against corrosion is needed. This in-service, no hot works bolted design is a cost-effective alternative to pipework replacement.

Pipes get rusty, they get corroded, and they become damaged – in short they become unsuitable and unsafe for use.  In harsh environments, such as oil rig in the North Sea, the replacement of such damaged pipes via traditional methods means shutting down the equipment and cutting out the affected area. This is expensive and disruptive to the normal operations on the oil rig.

An alternative was required. Allan Syme (TSG Marine – managing director) had seen repairs being carried out on ship decks using SPS® (Sandwich Plate System), where a cavity between two metal plates is injected with a chemical which then hardens. As it hardens the chemical bonds to the two metal plates, creating a sandwich. Along with his engineering team Allan developed the idea of using SPS® around a damaged pipe in order to repair it. 

Carrying out the repair of a pipe this way has a number of advantages; (i) it is an in-service repair method meaning the equipment the pipe is connected to does not have to be shut down for the repair to take place; (ii) it is permanent which is unusual as most repair methods are temporary; (iii) it is a bolted no hot works design therefore no welding is required making it safer to install; and (iv) it is class approved meaning TSG Marine have had the product verified by a leading industry body (DNV GL).
