Three killed, several injured in Kentucky boat yard explosion

22 January 2018

An explosion on a tugboat docked for repairs in on the Tennessee River in Kentucky killed three people and injured several others on January 19, a Kentucky State Police spokesperson said. Dozens of people were either aboard the boat or at the site when the explosion occurred, and there was no early indication of foul play, he added.

Local emergency agencies responded to the blast, and the US Coast Guard and Occupational Safety and Health Administration sent investigators to the site.

Workers from four companies were present when the blast occurred, state police said. The preliminary investigation indicated that the explosion happened inside the boat, resulting in a flash fire. Some 41 people were present on site, though not all were on the tugboat at the time of the explosion.

Six people were taken to hospitals for injuries ranging from minor to serious, state police said. Two of them were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
