19 February 2018
Two people were killed in an explosion at the Saipol oilseed plant in Dieppe on February 17. Local officials said 11 people received light injuries, mostly suffering shock. A team of 40 firefighters, police and rescuers were quickly on the scene, where the explosion was followed by a fierce blaze with huge flames and a large column of smoke.
A spokesman for the company said the explosion happened as maintenance work was being carried out on an oil tank, and that at this stage the cause of the blast was unknown. The two dead were maintenance workers employed by a subcontractor.
Saipol is the oilseed subsidiary of the Avril cooperative group, the largest biodiesel producer in Europe and largest table oil producer in France with brands including Lesieur and Pouget.
The Dieppe plant employs 40 people.
