The incident was caused by a detonation inside a pipe cleaning machine, the local Investigative Committee said in a press release.

Surgutneftegas is one of the largest private vertically integrated oil companies in Russia and is involved in prospecting, exploration and production of hydrocarbons in three Russian oil and gas provinces — Western Siberia, Eastern Siberia and Timan-Pechora.

The company's refinery in Khanty-Mansi Okrug is the only one in Siberia and is one of the largest in Russia.
