Brod Mayor Ilija Jovicic said that some of the injured workers were hospitalised, according to Srna news agency, but their lives were not in danger. He later said the situation had been bought under control.

The oil refinery in Brod, as well as the refinery in Modrica and Nestro Petrol in Banja Luka, are part of Optima Group, majority owned by NefteGazInkor, a subsidiary of the Russian company Zarubezhneft.

The refinery is in the Serb-controlled section of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Republika Srpska, on the Sava river.
