New generation DCS protects previous investments
01 March 2008
Yokogawa Electric has released the latest version of its production control system that will become the flagship platform for the company’s VigilantPlant Operational Excellence initiative. Importantly, it secures clear backward compatibility and consistency with previous systems. Yokogawa suggests the new initiative eliminates unplanned downtime, improves asset utilisation and allows businesses to adapt to shifting market conditions quickly and efficiently.

The Centum VP redefines the role of the distributed control system (DCS) by offering integrated plant information management, asset management and operation support functions. When fully implemented, Centum VP will offer the user a unified operating environment, using a single data base for the various functions of Process control, data historian, alarm management and asset management. The first element of the system, launched last month, is the human machine interface units which enhance operator interaction with the DCS and pave the way for the visualisation of much more data which will be available once the single databases and other features of Centum VP become available.
This is the eighth generation of the Centum series, and succeeds the Centum CS 1000/ Centum CS 3000. Yokogawa launched Safety Excellence solutions in 2005, Asset Excellence solutions in 2006, and Production Excellence solutions in 2007. The launch of the latest version, Centum VP integrates three excellence solutions into one platform.
Satoru Kurosu, Senior Vice President of Yokogawa’s Industrial Automation Business Headquarters, commenting on the launch said: “Centum VP is designed to empower real-time decision makers at all levels of a plant’s operations. A significant improvement in information efficiency enables our customers to
enhance both plant safety and business agility.”
