ATEX Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge chosen by CAN in order to reduce time spent in hazardous area

11 June 2019

The Cygnus 1 Intrinsically Safe UTG is the world’s only reliable and simple-to-use ultrasonic thickness gauge that has been certified intrinsically safe to the highest possible ATEX rating; this makes it the number 1 choice for all engineers and technicians working within potentially explosive environments.

Certified Intrinsically Safe to ATEX Marking Group I & Group II / CSA Class 1 Group A, B, C & D Division 1 means that the Cygnus 1 Intrinsically Safe thickness gauge is ideal for use in Zone 0, Zone 1 hazardous areas and requires no plant shutdown or hot work permit.

CAN, a market leading life of asset integrity service provider, recently chose the Cygnus Instruments “Cygnus 1 I.S. Gauge” for one of its projects; the Cygnus gauge was immediately utilised within a hazardous zone zero environment on an onshore asset.

One of the many challenges CAN face in this particular type of hazardous area is obtaining accurate and reliable thickness readings - without generating a spark potential. CAN found the Cygnus 1 I.S. Gauge not only very compact and robust but very simple to use, delivering very clear and straightforward readings.

Health and Safety remains at the forefront of CAN’s operations, not only working safely but making safety intrinsic for their client’s operations. Importantly, the Cygnus gauge enabled CAN’s technicians to obtain rapid results, reducing the amount of time spent within the hazardous area. As a market leader, CAN is always delivering innovative solutions to the energy industry worldwide.

As with all Cygnus ultrasonic thickness gauges, the Cygnus 1 uses the Cygnus multiple-echo technique which provides the most accurate and reliable thickness measurements and can read through coatings and corrosion. In addition to oil & gas production facilities, the Cygnus gauge has been approved for use in mines and is also useful in maintenance and inspections of LPG vessels and FPSOs.

The gauge body has been designed to be rugged, durable and shock-proof, and has been IPX5 and IPX7 rated meaning that this heavy-duty sealed unit is highly water, dirt and dust resistant.

Cygnus Instruments designs and manufactures a wide range of highly durable and accurate UT thickness gauges. To find out more about the Cygnus 1 gauge, click here. Alternatively, call us on +44 (0) 1305 265533 or email sales@cygnus-instruments.com.
