Wearable technology eliminates microsleeps

The Life series of products, developed by Australia-based SmartCap, are wearable technologies that help prevent microsleeps by providing accurate alertness measurements in real-time to operators and drivers.

While there are several technologies that react to a person showing signs of fatigue, Life proactively monitors the initial stages by alerting an operator before symptoms of fatigue progress, enabling them to better manage their fatigue.

The LifeBand can be attached to several types of headwear, including hard hats and caps, or can be worn on its own. It then monitors fatigue measurements by using a method called EEG (electroencephalography) technology that measures the electrical activity of the brain. 

Workers can monitor their fatigue levels in real-time via Bluetooth using the LifeApp. The app provides a fatigue level ‘speedometer’ and can help prevent microsleeps before they even occur. The early warning system enables proactive intervention to better manage fatigue risk. 

By providing fatigue monitoring without the need for in-cab cameras, Life ensures ongoing compliance with the strictest of workplace privacy requirements. The products are currently in use within the mining and road transport industries.
