The explosion happened at around 21:00 local time. The seven injured workers were taken to a nearby hospital while one worker was found dead in the early hours of July 22.

South Korean news channel KBS World reports that the explosion did not cause a fire to break out at the plant, but that parts of the building suffered significant damage. Nearby factories were also damaged by the blast.

Around 50 fire engines were sent to the scene to ensure further blasts did not occur.

Local police said they have opened a joint investigation with the fire department to determine the cause of the explosion.
