Expansion of premier research campus

04 November 2008

FM Global, one of the worlds largest commercial property insurers, announced the US$38 million expansion of its 1,600-acre one-of-a-kind research campus located in West Glocester, Rhode Island, USA. The enhancements will ensure FM Global continues to keep pace with the increasing needs of its clients seeking loss prevention solutions, especially in the wake of rapid globalisation and increased supply chain risks.

The Research Campus currently employs 108 people, with plans to increase the workforce by 7% when the expansion is complete.

Scientific research and product testing conducted at FM Global’s existing US$85 million research campus, the worlds largest centre of its kind, replicates warehouse-size fires, dust explosions and nearly every natural disaster that Mother Nature can muster. The result of that work turns science into solutions to help clients better protect their facilities from property risk and related business disruption.

When the research campus began initial construction in 2001, FM Global was a US$1.7 billion company. Since then, it has grown to more than US$4.7 billion in size, with a client base that includes one out of every three Fortune 1000 companies whose property protection needs have increased, especially in response to rising demands for companies to remain competitive in an ever-changing, global business climate.
No one envisioned the recent dramatic growth in globalisation and the resulting stress it has had on stretched supply chains around the world, noted Thomas Lawson, FM Globals senior vice president of engineering and research. As our clients’ businesses and needs continue to grow, FM Global’s research campus enhancements will enable us to enhance the quality of our research and testing so we can continue to provide the best loss prevention advice to help keep clients operational, especially as property-related business losses increase in frequency and severity.

The Research Campus expansion project adds new capabilities for natural hazards such as wind, flood and earthquakes, as well as the highest quality test environment in the worlds largest fire testing laboratory.
The improvements provide higher quality research and testing, resulting in faster answers to help businesses deal with new and evolving threats.
