Full performance even when the heat is on

29 November 2010

A hardware upgrade gives latest generation Open HMI systems from R. Stahl a performance boost in high-temperature environments: the series of explosion-protected panel PCs now features Intel Atom series CPUs. The extremely energy-efficient architecture of these processors minimises internal heat loss and ensures continuous operation with full system performance at temperatures of up to +50 °C. The system can even briefly tolerate peaks of up to +55 °C.

Given ambient temperatures in this range, the preceding generation of Pentium M processors would automatically reduce the internal clock rate, as this was the only way to prevent the processor core from overheating. Though featuring an optimised thermal design and sophisticated heat dissipation measures, Open HMIs with a Pentium M processor therefore remained prone to suffer from somewhat reduced performance under extreme conditions. This is no longer an issue for Atom CPUs exposed to the same temperatures.

The minimum operating temperature for the systems is -30 °C. The series is certified for gas and dust zones 1, 21, 2 and 22. The proven and service-friendly design remains the same: the closed housing of an Open HMI contains modules with separate explosion protection that can be replaced individually if and when required. As before, no fans or other rotating parts are required, i.e. vibrations or other mechanical stress in rough environments never stand in the way of an Open HMI’s application. Touch screens make the panel PC series particularly user-friendly – even staff in full protective gear can operate the stations with gloved hands.

Thanks to their open platform the devices boast a great degree of flexibility with regard to software, and are ready to plug and play due to the pre-installed Windows operating system.

Open HMIs have a life cycle of over 50,000 hours. They come with a great number of international certifications. They are available with screen sizes of up to a 24" wide-screen format with full HD resolution. If required, optional accessories such as separate keyboards, pointer devices and special input devices such as Mifare and barcode readers can also be supplied.
