The March 6 fire happened as the men were working on a flare platform as part of a crude unit turnaround that had started four days previously. The workers were employed by JV Industrial Co, subcontracted to carry out maintenance at the Memphis refinery by Valero.

Both companies, in full cooperation with governmental authorities, are investigating the cause of the incident.

The Memphis refinery is able to process up to 195,000 barrels of crude oil a day.
