National Skills Academy Process Industries new course for operators

19 July 2013

The UK-based National Skills Academy Process Industries (NSAPI) has launched its latest process safety training course – Process Safety Management for Operations. This course is the third in a series of process safety courses developed by the Academy to meet the requirements of the Process Safety Management (PSM) training standards.

These standards have been designed in partnership with senior industry health and safety representatives, UK process industry trade associations and the Health & Safety Executive, to raise the profile and increase the take-up of process safety awareness training across high hazard industries.

Previous Academy courses for Process Safety Leadership and Process Safety Management Foundations have focused on building awareness about the importance of process safety among senior executives, managers and supervisors.

This new course provides operations and maintenance personnel with a clear awareness and understanding of the principles of process safety, and the associated hazards and controls as it affects them on their site.

Neil Smith, Academy Course Director, said: “Process Safety Management for Operations takes our process safety awareness training to the front line.  Operators and maintenance personnel have to manage the risks and hazards of their process or plant on a daily basis, so it is crucial that they build and maintain a high level of awareness of the principles of process safety, and fully understand the significant contribution that they make to effective process safety management.”

Delivered using clear language and practical workshop activities, the PSMO course allows participants to review actual incidents and near misses, and explore how the lessons learned can be applied to their own setting. The course emphasises the value of communication and feedback between operators, maintenance personnel and management, and how this contributes to continual improvements in process safety.

The delivery of PSMO has also been tailored to meet the requirements of operator and maintenance personnel shift patterns with bite-sized modules delivered through a licenced training package that puts the organisation in control of the training delivery. As part of this licenced option, the Academy provides all the course materials and a trainer familiarisation and approval package to enable employers to get their PSMO training up and running.
