Hylec-APL launches labour-saving K9 Clamp cable connector

04 September 2013

Hylec-APL, the specialist supplier of electronic and electromechanical components in the UK and Europe, has announced the launch of the K9 Clamp connector. Designed to cut electrical installation times by up to 80% and increase profits for installers, the patented K9 Clamp connector uses insulation displacement technology (IDT) to eliminate the need for stripping, twisting and physically connecting wires.

The IP33 rated dustproof and waterproof cage construction, meanwhile, means there’s no need to tape up newly created in-line or spurred connections and no risk of electric shock.

How K9 works

With K9, unstripped cables are placed into each opening of the insulation displacement connector cage, which then snap shut to secure the wiring in place. Precision-sharpened connector blades cut through the insulating sheath, cold welding the wires to the K9’s interior. This creates an airtight connection between the wires.

The K9 product range

K9 is available in two shapes and 11 unique models:
* ‘I Type’ for end to end connections - five models with cable diameters ranging from 0.1 – 5.0mm and current ratings from 3Amp to 30Amp, depending on the conductor cross sectional area.
* ‘T Type’ for spurred connections - as for the ‘I Type’ plus an extra model with two different conductor sizes, The ‘I’ end of the connector caters for conductors of 0.1 – 0.5mm2, while the ‘T’ end accommodates conductors of 0.6 – 1.0mm2.  As the ‘T’ end simply clamps onto the conductor, there’s no need to cut and reconnect existing cables.

The maximum voltage for every K9 product is 600V. The connectors are manufactured in RoHS compliant plastic and feature brass copper connector blades.

IDT is used extensively in telecommunications and computing. However recent developments, enabling multiple stranded wire conductors to be used, have created time-saving opportunities for installers in the domestic/commercial, industrial, marine and automotive sectors as well as panel building and low voltage industrial applications.

Commenting on the launch of the K9, Terry Spriggs, Product Marketing Manager at Hylec-APL said, “Cutting, stripping and twisting cables - particularly when creating spurred connections – are among the most time-consuming elements of typical electrical installations. By eliminating these tasks and removing the need to tape up connections, the K9 Clamp connector can significantly boost the profitability of installers in a wide range of industry sectors.”
