Essex chemical plant blast injures two

27 September 2013

A chemical factory explosion on September 26 in West Thurrock, Essex caused minor injuries to two people, according to police. Residents in the area were initially told to stay indoors and keep windows closed following the explosion in a chlorine scrubbing unit at Industrial Chemicals Ltd, situated on a industrial estate near the town.

Witnesses reported seeing a bright flash of light followed by a large plume of smoke, and a strong smell of chlorine spread across the area.

Essex Fire and Rescue said there appeared to have been a leak of caustic soda liquid, but safety experts later said there was no danger to the public.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated.
