Two killed, dozens injured in South African factory blasts

15 October 2013

The City of Cape Town temporarily closed the Global Gases factory after two men were killed in an explosion at the plant on October 11. Three days later, an explosion at Rolfe Laboratories, a deodorants and cosmetics factory in Middelburg, in the Eastern Cape, left 42 people injured, police confirmed, with 18 in a serious condition.

Police forensics team and investigators from the Department of Labour were due to visit both sites on October 15 to investigate the reasons for the explosions and fires.#

In Cape Town, a prohibition order was issued to the management that the facility must be shut down. A private service provider, Comp Air, had been contracted to repair a compressor at the factory, located in the Atlas Gardens industrial park. At around 4pm a compressor and gas cylinders exploded, ripping out the windows and sections of the corrugated iron roof.
