Extronics ATEX-approved Uninterruptible Power Supplies range

The Extronics iUPS200 is a Zone 2 backup system made from 316L stainless steel and is designed to provide backup for critical equipment such as wireless network equipment or people tracking and automatic mustering systems for hazardous process areas e.g. offshore platforms, petrochemical plants etc.
The iUPS101 is an ATEX Zone 1 power backup solution entirely developed by Extronics. Capable of producing up to 9kVA for 60 minutes at 20°C, the modular design allows great flexibility for a wide variety of solutions. In the short time since its launch, the iUPS101 UPS system has been particularly well received by the offshore oil & gas market having been deployed in a number of critical applications
Extronics has already shipped a number of units to major production sites around the world e.g. North Sea, Azerbaijan, China, Australia, Middle East etc. One application where the unit has proved of particular interest is to provide back-up power to blow-out prevention systems. This is one of the recommendations of the A.P.I. (American Petroleum Institute) in "Specifications for Control Systems for Drilling Well Control Equipment".
One particular UPS solution was developed for CAD Control Systems of Broussard, Louisiana, the industry leader in the design and manufacture of Control Systems and High Pressure Test Systems for the world’s leading drilling contractors. Previously CAD had deployed an uninterruptible power supply with battery in the safe area and run armoured cable to the BOP which was within the zoned hazardous area. However, CAD wanted to create a more elegant, self-contained solution. Additionally as many drilling operations were being reassessed as an entirely ATEX / IECEx Zone 1 hazardous areas, it was clear that an alternative backup power solution was required. More specifically CAD required a solution that would provide a minimum of 1.5KVA for at least 2 hours in a range of ambient temperatures.
Through a series of technical discussions with CAD, a full specification was developed which met all the criteria of both the API and of CAD’s end customer. The system had alarm and status LEDs visible through a glass window. Surface mounted switches allowed configurable system control, and a stainless steel close-coupled termination enclosure & external battery box meant that the main explosion proof enclosure did not need to be opened.
