Explosion and fire cause extensive damage at Belgian fertiliser plant
16 January 2014
An explosion and fire on January 14 destroyed part of the Yara plant at Saint-Ghislain in southern Belgium. Police said onsite emergency teams and local firefighters contained the incident and no one was injured. Initial reports say the explosion happened during the restart of an ammonia unit when a hydrogen leak led to a larger conflagration.
The plant reported a similar incident in June 2009, when two staff were seriously injured in an explosion in an ammonia unit.
