Vietnam mine blast kills six

At least six workers were killed in a gas explosion at a coal mine in the northern province of Quang Ninh on January 16. According to the Vietnam Coal – Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited, the accident happened at a coal mine run by subsidiary Dong Vong Coal Co. in Uong Bi Town.

A fire sparked by the explosion is still blazing, the company reported, adding that rescue efforts were underway.

Government agencies are  investigating the cause of the accident. All six of the victims’ bodies have been retrieved.

Since last year, 36 coal workers have been killed by mine accidents in Vietnam, according to Lao Dong (Labor) newspaper.
