Essex maltings dust explosion injures worker

24 January 2014

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said a dust explosion at Bairds Malt, Witham, caused burns to the head and neck of a worker on the morning of January 24. Two fire crews were sent to the scene and gave first aid to the victim until paramedics arrived. A fire at the plant was extinguished an hour after the explosion was first reported.

The dust explosion reportedly took place in a malt drying vessel on the site. An ECFRS spokesman said a fire investigation would be carried out to establish the cause.
