Residents evacuated after Essex scrapyard explosion and fire

07 March 2014

Residents were evacuated from their homes on March 6 as firefighters fought a large blaze at a scrapyard in Takeley, Essex. A car in the metal shop at C & C Metal Trading caught fire, which set the building and a pile of tyres ablaze. The 11 people on site at the time managed to get out quickly and the fire was extinguished in two hours.

A large explosion was heard on the site, which Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said could have been due to oxygen and acetylene cylinders. Thick black smoke covered the locality, and two people suffered minor injuries.

The incident has been referred to the Health and Safety Executive.
