Ohio steel plant explosion injures four
17 June 2014
An explosion at the Republic Steel plant in Lorain, Ohio, occurred when workers in the melt shop restarted a furnace shut down over the weekend, the company said on June 1. Production at the melt shop is at a standstill while company officials and an Ohio Occupational Health and Safety Administration inspector assess the damage.
The blast injured four workers, with two treated and released the same day, according to a statement from the company.
In April, the Canton-based Republic Steel agreed to pay $2.4 million to settle alleged health and safety violations at its Lorain Plantt, and in February, a long-time plant employee was killed in a railyard accident.
