Two injured in Ohio grain elevator explosion
18 September 2014
On September 18 two contractors were seriously injured in an explosion at the Mercer Landmark grain elevator in Celina, Ohio. According to a fire department spokesperson, a dust explosion in the elevator was followed by a fire.
An investigation has been launched into the incident by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the local fire authortities, and one area of inquiry is whether the recent installation of a dust pan contributed.
Mercer Landmark is a farm cooperative with 18 facilities throughout west and central Ohio. In 2013 the company was cited by OSHA for two serious violations, one for failure to develop and implement a written housekeeping programme to reduce accumulations of dust and the second for wiring locations inside the facility not being intrinsically safe.
