Gas blast at NE China coal mine kills 10

Ten people trapped underground after a gas explosion at a coal mine in Jixi City in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province have died, Xinhua said on December 14. Rescuers have retrieved the bodies from the Xingyun Colliery in Jidong County, according to a statement from the provincial production safety supervision and administration bureau.
The explosion occurred on the morning of December 14.. The cause of the accident is being investigated.
According to government statistics, 1,049 miners were killed in Chinese mines last year, representing more than two-thirds of global mining deaths.
China is the world’s biggest consumer of coal, using it to supply two-thirds of its energy needs last year, and produces more than one-third of annual global coal output.
