According to state officials, the accident occurred on the afternoon of February 23 when the three employees were working in the detonator drying room. Improper handling of chemical precursors could have caused the explosion, the officials said.

Elements of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) shut the site after the incident and evacuated 358 workers from an 800 metre radius blast zone around the explosion site.

Some 30 people were treated for minor injuries after the explosion.

According to EFE, Industrias Tecnos has been a supplier to law enforcement agencies in Mexico and the armed forces of several countries since 1961.
