Mexico ammunition plant blast kills two
25 February 2015
Two workers were killed in an explosion at a shotgun cartridge and rifle shell manufacturing plant at Ahuatepec, a city in the central Mexican state of Morelos, emergency management officials said. A third employee at the Industrias Tecnos SA plant had burns to the whole of her body and was hospitalised.
According to state officials, the accident occurred on the afternoon of February 23 when the three employees were working in the detonator drying room. Improper handling of chemical precursors could have caused the explosion, the officials said.
Elements of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) shut the site after the incident and evacuated 358 workers from an 800 metre radius blast zone around the explosion site.
Some 30 people were treated for minor injuries after the explosion.
According to EFE, Industrias Tecnos has been a supplier to law enforcement agencies in Mexico and the armed forces of several countries since 1961.
