Is your proof testing safe?

01 June 2015

Risknowlogy has announced the introduction of a Functional Safety training course for Instrument Technicians. Our new SILComp® course provides the theoretical and practical knowledge base for competency in the tasks that technicians face on a daily basis and fills the gap in demonstrating competency in compliance with IEC 61511.

The SIL of the SIF must be maintained

In any project, the need for a safety instrumented system – and the SIL level required – will be identified after HAZOP and LOPA. The systems integrators design a system to meet that SIL. There is a SAT to ensure that what’s built meets the SIL. On commissioning there is a high level of confidence that the required protection is in place.

The plant may then operate for decades. During that time, the SIL level needs to be maintained and instrument technicians carry that responsibility. There are many opportunities for the SIL level to be compromised and this mustn’t be allowed to happen.

Our training specialists give delegates the knowledge they need to keep the safety functions performing to the required SIL over the entire life of the plant - and to understand what happens if this isn’t achieved.

Part of the competency matrix

Today’s instrument technicians need to be multi-skilled and their ability to work on different systems is normally tracked by a personal competency matrix. SILComp is the formal mechanism for ensuring technicians are competent to carry out commissioning, proof testing and maintenance of functional safety systems.
Attitudes and Behaviour
Our objective is also to change attitudes and behaviour – we use short videos, classroom exercises and case studies to drive home learning points to support this. Our students leave the course fully aware of the consequences of not maintaining the SIL of safety functions.

Assessment and Examination

Our clients tell us that they need a robust assessment process of the course attendees. Evaluation exercises follow each module and a concluding examination confirm that the teaching has been understood. Successful students are awarded a Risknowlogy SILComp® certificate and their achievement is recorded on the Risknowlogy website, via a personal “Safety Passport”.

Open and In-house customised courses

“Open” training courses are held at various locations around the country, but the training can also be “in-house”. In-house courses allow us to customise the training, referencing actual procedures and local terminology – making the training completely relevant to the technicians working on their own site.

Risknowlogy - Training, Consultancy and Certification

Risknowlogy provides training, consultancy and certification in Functional Safety. More than 3,000 students have followed our training programmes, major end-users, systems integrators and EPC’s call on us for advice and we certify products from the major players in our industry as being compliant with 61508. Risknowlogy - experts in risk, reliability and safety.
