ONR publishes stress test final report on UK non-power generating nuclear facilities (22 May 2012)
On May 15 the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) published its stress test assessment on UK non power-generating nuclear facilities. These are in addition to the stress tests carried out at UK nuclear power plants last year, which were required by the European Council, and the report for which which was published by the ONR last October.

Explosion risks from cutting of drums and containers (18 November 2010)
Employees contemplating ‘hot work’ on used containers, and managers overseeing it, are being urged to check that the correct working procedures are followed after two people were killed in separate incidents in North East Scotland whilst cutting up drums.

Man killed by toxic gas (28 September 2010)
Regularly in the news we hear about incidents occurring in the oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical industries which could have been prevented if only basic operational procedures and staff training programmes were in place. This week is no different with crisp-maker Walkers and chemical distributor Omnichem being fined a total of £350,000 after a worker was killed by a cloud of toxic gas.

Reducing oil and gas spills (20 September 2010)
Amor Group has stated that the oil and gas industry can improve its recent record in offshore oil and gas releases through improved process safety practices.Findings from the HSE’s offshore safety statistics bulletin 2009/10 revealed that releases of hydrocarbons form North Sea installations were at a five year high and up 40% on the previous year.

Food manufacturer fined after worker's skull crushed (10 September 2010)
The UK's biggest food manufacturer has been fined £14,000 after a 65kg metal pillar fell on a maintenance engineer in Merseyside, crushing his skull. Thomas Williams, from Prenton in Wirral, was working at Premier Foods Group's site at Manor Bakeries in Moreton on 24 July 2008 when a four-metre section of pillar fell on his head.

Offshore industry warned over 'not good enough' safety statistics (31 August 2010)
The offshore oil and gas industry has been warned about its safety record as new statistics show increases in major injuries and unplanned hydrocarbon releases. Figures released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that there were 50 major injuries reported in 2009/10 - up 20 on 2008/09 and higher than the average of 42 over the previous five years.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has revamped its Safety Bulletin system which warns industry of problems with equipment, process, procedures and substances that may lead to injury, with bulletins now available automatically via email, text message or RSS feed, as well as on the website.

Worker seriously burnt in dust explosion (09 February 2010)
Chromalloy UK, a technology company based in Nottingham has been fined nearly £50,000 for health and safety lapses at its premises in Derbyshire in October 2007, after a worker was seriously burnt in a dust explosion.

Company fined for exposing workers to radiation (07 December 2009)
Sellafield, Britain's biggest nuclear complex, was fined £75,000 after pleading guilty to breaches of health and safety law after two contractors inhaled radioactive contamination. The prosecution follows an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) into an incident on 11 July 2007 at Sellafield Nuclear Licensed Site in Cumbria.
