According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, the nationalised Argentinean oil company YPF, formerly owned by Spain's Repsol, is teaming up with Venezuelan oil giant PDVSA to explore the continental shelf around the Falkland Islands for oil.

Lightning causes Venezuela refinery fire (21 September 2012)
Two naphtha storage tanks at Venezuela's El Palito refinery caught fire on September 19 after the facility was struck by lightning during a storm, according to Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez. There are no reports of casualties.

Chavez defends oil minister following fatal refinery explosion (06 September 2012)
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez defended his oil minister on September 5, saying he has a solid record leading the industry for a decade despite a recent refinery explosion that killed at least 42 people. Expressing full support for Rafael Ramirez, Chavez said that if he wins re-election in October, Ramirez will remain as head of the Oil and Mining Ministry and the state-run company Petroleos de Venezuela SA, PDVSA.

Venezuelan refinery explosion kills 48 (28 August 2012)
An explosion at the Amuay refinery, the largest in Venezuela, killed 48 people on August 25. The resulting fire spread to a third storage tank two days later, confirming the incident as the country's worst oil industry accident. The explosion occurred after a gas cloud formed and erupted into a ball of flames that engulfed a National Guard post as well as homes and shops in front of the refining complex.
