Gas field explosion in Russia injures eight (15 March 2013)
An explosion at the Bovanenkovo gas field in the Yamalo-Nenets region of Northern Russia on March 13 injured eight. The accident happened when workers in a gas treatment workshop were adjusting equipment, Business TASS said.

Mine explosion kills eighteen in Northern Russia (11 February 2013)
On February 11 the Russian Interior Ministry said nine people had died and eight more could be trapped under rubble at the Vorkutinskaya coal mine in the northern Komi region after a gas explosion. Later in the day, Interfax said the death toll had increased to 18, with 10 brought to the surface.

First section of massive containment building for Chernobyl reactor now complete (29 November 2012)
The first section of a huge arch-shaped structure to be positioned over Reactor Number 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine has been assembled and raised, completing the first stage in the massive £1.2bn New Safe Confinement (NSC) project to cover up the reactor and its leaking concrete sarcophagus.

Seven injured in gas explosion at Russian coal mine (26 November 2012)
The accident took place at 4:56am local time near the town of Belovo, Kemerovo Oblast, in the Donbass coalfield, RIA Novosti news agency reported. Russia’s Emergency Ministry reported three miners sustained injuries while four others suffered moderate burns. 55 workers were rescued in total. Authorities are investigating the accident.

Russian rocket stage explosion creates debris swarm in space (26 October 2012)
After an August launch failure, a Russian Briz-M rocket stage with loaded fuel tanks exploded in low Earth orbit on October 16, creating a debris storm. NASA and other space agencies say the debris could threaten the International Space Station, as well as hundreds of satellites.
