Sudan cuts South Sudan pipeline and suspends cooperation (11 June 2013)
On June 9 the Government of Sudan cancelled nine security and economic pacts with South Sudan, following border clashes between the two states. "We will stop all nine agreements, not only oil," Information Minister Ahmed Bilal Osman said at a press conference.

Nigeria LNG declares force majeure after Shell pipeline leak (21 May 2013)
Nigeria LNG, Africa’s largest liquefied natural gas export terminal, said it had declared force majeure on exports following a leak in a supply pipeline owned by Shell Petroleum Development Company. Force majeure, a legal step that protects a company from liability when it cannot fulfill a contract for reasons beyond its control, was declared on May 15.

Dutch court acquits Shell of most charges in Nigeria oil spill case (01 February 2013)
Four Nigerian individuals and campaign group Friends of the Earth brought the case against Shell in The Hague, seeking compensation as they claimed spills were caused by poor maintenance. In a ruling on January 30, the court agreed with Shell that the spills were in fact caused by sabotage and dismissed four cases against the Anglo-Dutch parent company.

Algerian gas plant: death toll rises (21 January 2013)
According to a Reuters report on January 21, the hostage death toll from the four-day siege at the In Amenas natural gas plant in Eastern Algeria has risen to almost 60. The plant, operated by Sonatrach of Algeria, UK-based oil major BP and Statoil of Norway, was attacked by a group of Al Qaeda-linked terrorists on January 16 and was finally retaken by Algerian security forces on January 19.

Many hostages and kidnappers reported killed by Algerian forces at In Amenas gas plant (17 January 2013)
News agencies are saying that many people have been killed after Algerian forces opened fire on a vehicle at the remote Tigantourine gas plant near In Amenas, Eastern Algeria, where gunmen were holding dozens of Western hostages. An unnamed resident told Reuters there were many bodies at the scene but he did not say whether they were kidnappers, hostages or both.

Two reported killed in kidnapping at BP gas field in Algeria (16 January 2013)
Islamist militants attacked a gas production field in southern Algeria on January 15, kidnapping at least nine foreigners and killing two people during a dawn raid, local and company officials said. An al-Qaida-linked group operating in the Sahara said it had carried out the raid on the In Amenas facility, Mauritania's ANI news agency reported.

Over 50 feared dead in Nigeria pipeline explosion (14 January 2013)
Over 50 people are reported to have been killed in an attempt to siphon fuel from a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline at Arepo village in Ogun State, Nigeria, on January 12. The pipeline supplies petrol from Atlas Cove Jetty in Lagos to other locations in South-West Nigeria.

Lagos port blast and fire injures four (11 January 2013)
An oil depot in the port area of the Nigerian city of Lagos has been hit by a major explosion and fire. The blast, which shook buildings in the Apapa area, happened during a transfer of fuel from a barge, the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) said.

Lagos explosion and fire wrecks neighbourhood (02 January 2013)
An explosion in a building storing fireworks has set off a major fire and killed at least one person in Lagos, Nigeria. More than 40 people are reported to have been injured. The incident took place in the Jankara market area of Lagos Island, a particularly densely populated part of the city, and the ensuing blaze spread to 15 other buildings.

Explosions and fire reported at Sudan arms factory (24 October 2012)
Witnesses in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, reported explosions and a large conflagration at the site of a military factory on October 24. Initial media reports said the site of the incident was the Yarmouk ammunition factory. The reason for the explosions is not clear. A number of people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.
