BP challenges 'spurious’ claims from Macondo oil spill (21 May 2013)
Oil major BP has petitioned a US court regarding the company’s payouts stemming from its 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico, accusing a judge of allowing “absurd” compensation claims. BP wants to halt payouts, amounting to millions of dollars, in what it calls “spurious” compensation claims to victims of the spill.

Nigeria LNG declares force majeure after Shell pipeline leak (21 May 2013)
Nigeria LNG, Africa’s largest liquefied natural gas export terminal, said it had declared force majeure on exports following a leak in a supply pipeline owned by Shell Petroleum Development Company. Force majeure, a legal step that protects a company from liability when it cannot fulfill a contract for reasons beyond its control, was declared on May 15.

Exxon and Qatar Petroleum in talks to bring US gas to UK (21 May 2013)
Britain could receive nearly 16 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas to supply its depleted domestic gas supply market if plans by ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum to build a LNG export plant in the US go through. Reuters says the deal would see 15.6 million tonnes of LNG per year shipped from the proposed Golden Pass plant in Texas to the South Hook terminal in Wales.

Saudi refinery leak kills one (10 May 2013)
On May 6 one person was killed in a gas leak incident at Saudi Aramco’s Jeddah refinery, according to the Saudi Press Agency. The incident took place during routine maintenance and that the “limited” leakage was immediately stopped and the accident has not affected the company’s operations.

Key North Sea oil pipeline network faces closures after leaks (07 May 2013)
The UK North Sea Brent pipeline system may have to close briefly during repairs to the legs of the Cormorant Alpha platform, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa) said on May 6. The system, which carries 90,000 barrels of oil a day from the North Sea, was shut in January and March after oil leaks were detected at the Cormorant Alpha platform, operated by Taqa.

Shell avoids early involvement in UK shale gas (07 May 2013)
In a blow to Government attempts to attract investment to the industry, Shell has said that nobody knows whether shale will succeed in the UK and it has no desire to be the company that tries to find out. Simon Henry, Shell’s chief financial officer, said it had already allocated more than $6bn (£3.8bn) to shale globally and was not going to exceed that sum.

EPA revises natural gas production leak estimates downwards (07 May 2013)
A mid-April report from the US Environmental Protection Agency shows significant reductions in the estimate of how much methane leaks during natural gas production. The agency now says that tighter pollution controls resulted in an average annual decrease of 41.6 million metric tons of methane emissions from 1990 through to 2010, or more than 850 million metric tons overall.

US shale should cause Gazprom to lower gas export prices by 2016 (30 April 2013)
According to Oil & Gas Eurasia, Russia's Ministry of Economic Development is predicting that competition from North American shale gas exports will force Gazprom to lower its export prices significantly by 2016.

HSE receives award for outstanding contribution to offshore process safety (26 April 2013)
On April 25, the UK Health and Safety Executive received an award from the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) for its contribution to offshore process safety. IChemE’s Aberdeen members made the award in recognition of HSE Offshore Division’s dedicated implementation of an effective safety regime which has stood the test of time for more than 20 years.
