  • India power plant blast death toll reaches 36

    The death toll from the November 1 explosion at NTPC’s Unchahar coal-fired power plant in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, reached 36 on November 6. A total of 21 of the seriously injured were flown by air ambulance to New Delhi for specialist treatment after the incident and 18 are said to still be in critical condition, with further fatalities a possibility. Around 80 were less seriously injured....

    At least 15 labourers were injured when a crane broke and the molten iron ore it was carrying rained down on workers in a factory in Haridwar district, 200 km north east of New Delhi, police said on November 6. Five of the injured in the incident are said to be critical....

    At least 18 people were killed and around 100 injured after a boiler exploded on November 1 in the newest power generating unit at the NTPC Unchahar power plant in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh. The number of dead and injured may rise as many are believed to be trapped inside the unit and many of the injured have suffered severe burns....

    Twenty-eight workers were hospitalised after fire broke out at a factory producing incense sticks at Chandigarh in northern India. According to the Hindustan Times, sparks from electrical work being carried out on the premises led to a minor blast in two chemical containers, which in turn ignited sandalwood powder....

    Three workers sustained injuries after a large quantity of defective detonators exploded at the Badmal ordnance factory in Balangir district, Odisha, on September 15. Faulty detonators from shells are taken to the demolition yard, which is isolated from production and other  facilities, to be dismantled or destroyed. Five killed in Kashmir coal mine explosion 08 August 2017

A coal mine in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir has suffered a fatal explosion on August 6 with five miners reported to have been killed. The Deputy Commissioner of Muzaffarabad, 20 miles south of the mine site near Seri Darra village, said seven miners were digging coal about 800 feet deep in a shaft when a gas explosion caused the roof to collapse....

In a letter to the Indian Defence Production Secretary, Army headquarters has asked for a final adjudication on responsibility for the extensive fire at India’s largest ammunition storage depot at Pulgaon in Maharashtra on May 31, 2016. The incident resulted in the deaths of two army officials, four defence security corps personnel and 13 defence fire safety staff....

Shell fined $2.4m for fatal Pakistan tanker blast 07 July 2017

Pakistan's oil and gas regulator has ordered a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell to pay about 257 million rupees (about $2.4 million) in damages and compensation for a tanker explosion that killed more than 200 people last month. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority held Shell Pakistan Ltd responsible for the blast in Punjab province on June 25 after the tanker rolled over, and villagers rushed to collect leaking fuel....

Bangladesh garment factory explosion kills 10, injures 50 04 July 2017

A boiler explosion at a garment factory at Kashimpur in Gazipur district, near the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, killed 10 people and injured 50, officials said on July 3. The number still missing remained unclear as of July 4 an police said the search for more victims was ongoing.  This is the latest fatal incident to affect the sector, one of the country’s biggest employers....
