Integrated condition-based functionality: Ex zone 1/21 encoders identify problems before they occur

26 November 2015

To facilitate condition-based maintenance in the oil and gas industry, encoders with integrated ADS, Advanced Diagnostic System, are brought to the market by Leine & Linde. The company’s incremental encoder 841, certified for Ex zone 1/21, has the Advanced Diagnostic System ADS as an option.

Both the Leine & Linde incremental 841 encoder and the absolute 647/648 encoder are ATEX- and IECEx-certified for zone 1/21

“Encoders with integrated self-diagnostics warn of impending problems at an early stage, says Product Manager Linda Carnbo. “This function has been extremely helpful out in the field where the encoder is used. It enables maintenance to be planned in advance, and prevents unscheduled production stops.”

Being a supplier with long experience from coal, steel and mining industries, Leine & Linde provides encoders with important features for motors, drives, cranes, drilling and other equipment in heavy duty applications. The know-how has resulted in functionality like the ADS, Advanced Diagnostic System, which simplifies troubleshooting by built-in diagnostics. Problems are identified before they occur, and maintenance measures can be initiated in good time.

Robust and flexible absolute encoders

Leine & Linde has also released a series of extremely robust absolute encoders, the 647/648, suitable for demanding offshore applications where they will be subjected to shock and vibration on a daily basis. The flameproof protection permits the encoders to be used in zone 1/21 areas, where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur on occasions in normal operation.
The bearings and construction form the basis for a long service life.

The ATEX- and IECEx-certifications were made to permit a wide range of mechanical configurations, thanks to a well planned development process. The result is great flexibility for customer adaptations. Leine & Linde has also included the full interface range, such as PROFIBUS, PROFINET, CANopen, DeviceNet, SSI and EnDat, for the product to be useful within many fields.

The company is fully qualified as a supplier to Europe's major oil and gas companies and is listed on the Achilles supplier lists FPAL and JQS.
