Arco welcomes Thermo-Man® to the UK to demonstrate arc flash testing

20 October 2016

This month, the UK’s leading safety company, brought Thermo-Man®, the world’s most advanced life-size thermal burn injury evaluation system, on its first visit to the UK. In a series of educational seminars for customers, held at the Humberside Fire Service’s Headquarters, Hessle and Linlithgow, Arco demonstrated the risks of workplace exposure to heat and flame and the types and combinations of garments to choose to stay protected.

In industrial applications, the main thermal hazards which workers need to be protected from are heat and flame, fire, heat and electric arc. The life-sized mannequin is engulfed by a controlled flash fire and has over 100 sensors to assess how test garments would cope in extreme thermal situations. The Thermo-Man® test simulates the exposure of a garment to a typical excess fuel fire with temperatures rising up to 1,000°C. It predicts the garment’s protective performance and integrity against heat, flame and fire during such a typical fire incident.

Co-hosting the event, DuPont™ communicated the benefits of Nomex® fibre garments alongside live demonstrations using Thermo-Man®.

Richard Sansom, Product and Procurement Manager at Arco said: "With a deep understanding of customer protection needs, Arco has developed a layering system that provides increased levels of protection from heat and flame hazards and we were the first distributor in the industry to test our garment combinations using Thermo-Man®. Today our customers have been able to see this for themselves and to learn how we can help them choose the correct protection for the jobs they do."

Arco offer a collection of ArcoPro Flame Retardant (FR) garments tested and approved to EN 11612:2008 – Protective Clothing to Protect against Heat and Flame, ensuring the highest possible protection for wearers against the risk of Electric Arc.

The unit was in the UK to demonstrate to customers the testing Arco conducts on the new ArcoPro Arc Flash range. Arco tested single garments and combinations of garments to show the additional protection that layering your garments can provide, in terms of reducing the likelihood of burn injuries and improving survival rate following an accident.
