Compact, robust I/O and terminal blocks cut maintenance costs in hazardous areas

10 August 2017

Stand 3B141 at SPE Offshore Europe 2017 sees WAGO presenting its latest automation products for harsh conditions, hazardous areas and explosive environments.

New products for offshore and marine applications, such as I/O modules with Ex certification to ATEX and IECEx, and Intrinsically Safe (IS) modules, will be launched.

WAGO’s XTR range of robust controllers and I/O modules include internal protections against shock, vibration, interference and impulse voltage. This enables them to be installed in indoor or outdoor control cabinets near to heavy-duty equipment such as marine diesel engines, cranes and drills. Equipment, energy and maintenance costs are therefore reduced by eliminating the need for expensive and space-consuming external cooling systems or protection circuits.

The range protects against physical and electronic interference certified to international marine, offshore and industrial safety standards (e.g., UL, ANSI/ISA, DNV GL, ABS, LR):
* Operating temperature of -40 °C to +70 °C
* Vibration protection up to 5 G acceleration (EN 60068-26)
* Shock protection up to 25 G (IEC 60068-2-27)
* Isolation up to 5,000 V impulse voltage (EN 60870-2-1)
* Immunity to interference (EN 606870-2-1)

Each module packs up to 16 channels into a 12 mm wide housing, allowing more I/O to be deployed in smaller spaces. The I/O system can be scaled by adding up to 250 modules to the DIN rail, enabling a host of applications such as navigation and communication, propulsion control, deck machinery, ballast water and cargo management, and lighting and heating controls.

Compatibility with all major fieldbus protocols ensures the system can communicate with automation devices and systems from other vendors.

WAGO’s XTR range of controllers and I/O modules are ATEX and IECEx approved to meet the requirements for explosive environments including gas and dust areas of zone 2/22. Intrinsically safe (IS) modules can be integrated for signal acquisition from zones 0/20 and 1/21.

Also on the stand at SPE Offshore Europe will be WAGO’s largest ever rail-mount terminal block, the 285 Series. This range for high voltage applications supports conductors up to 35, 50 and 95 mm2 with hazardous area approvals, while an even larger variant for conductors up to 185 mm2 is available for current loads up to 353 A, and voltages up to 1000V AC or 1500V DC.
