Amsterdam Apple store iPad explosion leads to evacuation

20 August 2018

An Apple store in Leidseplein Square in Amsterdam was temporarily closed after an iPad battery explosion resulted in leaking vapours. The device was placed in a container full of sand by staff and firefighters responded to the scene. Local media reported that three people had to be treated for respiratory issues after the incident.

A member of the fire service suggested a damaged battery was to blame, according to Dutch website iCulture. The store has since reopened following the incident on August 19.

According to 9to5Mac, the incident has no relation to the recent iPhone battery replacement program. In December, Apple admitted slowing down old iPhone devices with low-capacity batteries, claiming it was a way of protecting the devices' components.

'Thermal events’ in Apple stores have also occurred in both Switzerland and Spain earlier this year.

In January, an iPhone battery exploded and prompted the evacuation of 50 staff and customers at an Apple store in central Zurich. A store employee suffered minor burns and seven people received medical treatment.

Later that month, an iPhone battery exploded during repair at the Apple store in Valencia, Spain. There were no injuries in the latter incident, but the store filled with smoke and was evacuated.
