B - Technical Innovation: An innovative product or system for use in hazardous area environments

B1
Company: Easy-Laser
Product: Easy-Laser XT550 Intrinsically safe laser shaft alignment system for iOS and Android tablets.
The Easy-Laser XT550 is the world’s first Ex/ATEX approved laser shaft alignment system for use with third party tablets and smartphones running iOS and Android. This means the technician can use the same display device for more type of work, lowering the investment cost a lot. It also means that a company can have both Ex/ATEX approved alignment systems and those which are not, but just learn one software. This not only saves a lot of training time, but will also make the work easier for the operator.
Product launched: March 2018.

Company: Expo Technologies Limited
Product: EPPS (Electro Pneumatic Power Supply)
The EPPS allows the powering of Ex ia/b/c devices at point of use from a compressed air source in a Zone 1, 21 or Div1 environment. This innovation allows customers in the hazardous area to cost effectively add sensors and features that improve functionality, connectivity and enable Industry 4.0 (IoT). The benefits are significantly reduced installation costs removing the need for wiring runs and IS barrier cabinets.
A compact turbine generator that uses very small quantities of compressed air to generate intrinsically safe (Ex ia) electrical power up to 5W. As the use of small, low power electrical devices for controlling, monitoring and maintaining plant performance and safety becomes increasingly widespread through industry, more consideration is required for the means of communicating with and powering this technology. Employing such devices in hazardous locations presents additional plant design and infrastructure considerations to the engineer.
It is common when using low powered electronic devices in hazardous locations to employ the protection concept of “intrinsic safety” (Ex ia/ib/ic). Intrinsically safe wiring installations can be complex and expensive and there are inherent limitations to the length of intrinsically safe wiring. The only alternative currently available is to use intrinsically safe batteries, but these must be inspected and replaced periodically.
The EPPS offers an innovative and cost effective alternative on sites where compressed air is available. It is simple to install and reduces maintenance requirements by eliminating the need to replace batteries, thereby increasing the potential to improve safety and reliability by employing more of the growing number of intrinsically safe devices on the market.

Company: Ionix
Product: HotSense wall thickness measurement sensor
Ionix Advanced Technologies has developed a unique intrinsically-safe sensor – HotSense - to answer the challenge of providing accurate and repeatable wall thickness measurement in harsh environments, typically found in refinery or energy plant locations.
Current ultrasonic transducers are based on conventional piezo ceramics which are typically limited to an operating window below 200 degC, allowing them to be used during shutdown or non-critical areas only.
Ionix’s novel HPZ piezo ceramic is at the heart of our HotSense sensors, enabling Ionix to offer the first ultrasonic wall thickness sensor which can be permanently installed directly onto assets (pipes, tanks),in-service, and operating at temperatures ranging from -40°C up to 380°C.
We are currently developing the next iteration to extend this capability up to 550°C. Critically, the piezo properties can be controlled and modified, engineering sensors to be certified for the most extreme areas, recently achieving Ex ia certification for ATEX / IECEx Zone 0 use of the sensor.
Fully certified corrosion monitoring systems based on our sensor are now commercially available. By enabling wall thickness sensors to be permanently fitted to high temperature assets operating across abroad temperature range, regular and repeatable measurements can be taken. This improves accuracy and the volume of datapoints to be measured over time to enable accurate corrosion trending, which provides key asset information which impact plant productivity, operating costs, and safety.
HotSense sensors enable monitoring of high temperature and difficult to reach assets, outside of a shutdown window, reducing outages, and avoiding exposure of personnel to hazardous environments, thereby improving safety.

Company: Kellwood
Product: Stephenson series explosion-proof luminaires
The Stephenson Series comes in two different product types, the Stephenson 2 and the Stephenson 3 series. What makes the Stephenson Series family innovating is its versatility.
For example, the Stephenson 2 Series has a microwave sensor compatibility which is rarely seen on Atex products. The Stephenson Series family also comes with emergency compatibility and is the only Atex certified product from our range that has this capability.
With the Stephenson Series being able to be mounted Wall Mount, Surface Mount, Pole Mounted and Cable Suspended makes the product suitable for all types of applications. The product also comes in a variety of sizes, which include 2ft, 3ft and 4ft different colour finishes such as orange and grey and also includes different driver options including V4, V5, V6 and V7.
The Stephenson Series is a Slim Line Batten LED light and, as the only type of Atex light we offer, makes the product rare.

Company: Raytec
Product: Intelligent Emergency Luminaires
Raytec are the global technology leader for Hazardous Area LED lighting. We manufacture a full range of globally certified SPARTAN Ex luminaires to provide a solution for any application where there is risk of an explosion due to gas or dust.
This year we launched our new range of Intelligent Emergency Luminaires which take safety and performance of emergency luminaires to the next level. Featuring an innovative microprocessor, the luminaires automatically perform three different testing procedures to ensure the luminaire is operating correctly and the battery is functioning at its optimum.
Inspection is also made easy via a tri-colour LED indicator which communicates the overall health of the luminaire and which test is being carried out. Ease of maintenance is another key feature thanks to the unique modular design making access exceptionally easy. And don't worry about power, as the luminaires are capable of up to 100% light output, even in emergency mode.
Raytec revolutionise the safety of Hazardous Area lighting.
